How much does it cost to move house in New Zealand?
Moving a three-bedroom house across town in New Zealand costs about $500 to $1,600 with a removalist, on figures WiseMove published in October 2026. A one-bedroom place is about $250 to $600. Distance moves cost more: about $1,100 to $2,500 for a 500 km move, and $4,000 to $7,000 Auckland to Christchurch.

How much do removalists cost for a local move?
For a move within the same city, removalists usually charge by the hour for a truck and crew, so the size of the house sets the price. These are the ranges WiseMove's head of moving gave in a OneRoof article on 5 October 2026, for shifting furniture and boxes that are already packed. How much does it cost to move to another city?
Distance is the other big driver. The same OneRoof article put a three-bedroom household moving about 100 km, Hamilton to Rotorua, at $500 to $1,000, and about 500 km, Wellington to Tauranga, at $1,100 to $2,500. Auckland to Christchurch, which means a ferry crossing as well as two days of road, was $4,000 to $7,000.

What does the quote not include?
Usually the packing, the boxes and anything awkward. A removalist's hourly rate covers loading, driving and unloading. Packing your belongings for you is a separate service, priced by the packer-hour. Pianos, pool tables and large safes are priced on their own: the same article put a standalone local upright-piano move at around $200 to $500.
Ask every quote the same questions so they are comparable: is GST included, is there a minimum number of hours or a call-out fee, is travel time to your house charged, and what changes on a weekend or the last day of the month.

How much do moving boxes add?
Less than people expect, compared with the truck. On the published prices we read on 29 September 2026, new moving boxes bought in packs cost about $4 to $6 each, and a 30-box pack is $122 to $149 depending on the seller. A typical three-bedroom house needs several dozen boxes, so budget a couple of hundred dollars for boxes, tape and paper.

How can I make moving house cheaper?
Pay the removalist for the heavy, awkward work and do the rest yourself. Every hour you save the crew is money, and most of those hours are spent on things that are not furniture.
- Pack everything yourself before the truck arrives, and label boxes by room so unloading is fast.
- Get rid of things before you pack them. Every box you do not move is crew time you do not pay for.
- Move boxes and small items yourself over a few evenings, and book the removalist for the big furniture only.
- Avoid month-end, Fridays and long weekends, when demand is highest.
- Have everything packed, dismantled and by the door when the crew arrives.
- Get two or three written quotes on the same list of questions.
Is it cheaper to move house yourself?
For a small flat across town, usually. You pay for truck or trailer hire, fuel and some help, and you supply the labour. For a family home, a long distance or anything heavy, the saving shrinks once you count the truck, the fuel, the ferry if you are crossing Cook Strait, the time off work and the risk of damage or injury. Price both before you decide.
